Mrs SALLY QUINNELL (Camden)—Today I recognise the service of Private Joseph Charles Elliot, an Indigenous man who fought in Darwin during World War II. He was born in Sydney on the 16th of December 1909 and enlisted in the Australian Imperial and Citizen Forces on the 12th of January 1942. Private Elliot served in Darwin during the 2nd World War in the 20 Garrison Battalion. Private Elliot was discharged on February 8, 1943, after over 1 year of service. Shamefully private Elliot never received his service medals as he was an Indigenous serviceman. On Anzac Day I had the honour of presenting Private Elliot's medals to his family in a moving ceremony. While Private Elliot is no longer with us it was joyous to meet his family and learn about his story. I thank Private Joseph Charles Elliot for his service. Lest we forget.
