Appin Massacre Memorial Service

09 May 2024

Mrs SALLY QUINNELL (Camden)—On Sunday 14th April, I had the honour to attend the Appin Massacre Memorial ceremony hosted by the Winga Myamly Reconciliation Group to pay respect to the Dharawal people murdered by the British Military on the orders of Governor Macquarie on the 17th of April 1816. What happened on this day, 208 years ago, is one of the most heinous killings of the colonial Australian period. Remembering this day is an important part of healing and reconciliation. It was a wonderful ceremony to attend, some of the stories that were told were absolutely heartbreaking, but it was fantastic to see so many local people turn out to honour the victims and legacy of this tragedy. Thank you to all those who put on and supported this wonderful event including, the Tharawal Land Council, Aboriginal Communities of Macarthur Region, and the NSW Reconciliation Council.
